Customs code checker (HS, CN, TARIC)

Enter a commodity code to check its format, see which chapter it belongs to and how it breaks down into a 6-digit HS code, an 8-digit CN code and a 10-digit TARIC code. The tool also shows which declarations accept that level of detail.

Enter a 6, 8 or 10-digit code.

Format check only: the tool does not confirm that the code exists in the tariff in force, nor that it matches your product.

6, 8 or 10 digits: which code for which declaration?

  • 6-digit HS code: international Harmonized System nomenclature; enough for an H7 declaration (e-commerce) and for the ICS2 entry summary declaration (ENS)
  • 8-digit CN code: the EU Combined Nomenclature; used for exports and for intra-EU trade statistics
  • 10-digit TARIC code: required for imports into the EU, as it carries duties and measures (anti-dumping, quotas, restrictions)
  • United Kingdom: 10-digit commodity code on import, 8 digits on export

What the tool checks, and what it does not

The tool checks the number of digits and the chapter (chapters 00 and 77 do not exist, chapters 98 and 99 are special codes). It does not check that the subheading actually exists in the tariff in force, nor, above all, that it matches your product.

To confirm a code, look it up in TARIC (link below the result) and, if the classification is uncertain, apply to customs for a Binding Tariff Information (BTI) decision.

The most common code mistakes

  • Declaring an 8-digit code on import into the EU, where 10 digits are required
  • Reusing the foreign supplier's code: the first 6 digits are shared, the following ones are country-specific
  • Using a code from an old version of the tariff, changed in an annual update
  • Classifying by trade name instead of the product's material, function and presentation

Frequently asked questions

Does the tool tell me which code to use for my product?

No. It checks a code you already have. To find the code, start from the product's nature, material and use, look it up in TARIC and, if in doubt, apply for Binding Tariff Information.

Can a 10-digit code be used in a declaration that asks for 6 or 8 digits?

The first 6 and 8 digits of a TARIC code are the matching HS and CN codes: the tool displays them so you can use the level required.

Why is chapter 77 rejected?

Chapter 77 is reserved in the Harmonized System for possible future use: no goods are classified in it.

Is the code I enter stored?

No. The check runs in your browser and no data is sent.
