Where the figures come from
Trade with non-EU countries comes from customs declarations. Trade with other Member States comes from the monthly statistical survey on intra-EU trade in goods (EMEBI). The DGDDI publishes the data on data.gouv.fr under an open licence.
Amounts are declared values in euros, added up over the last 12 published months. Each record is one flow (import or export), one 8-digit Combined Nomenclature code (CN8) and one partner country.
Limits to keep in mind
- Totals may differ from the official headline figures (revised data, statistical confidentiality, military equipment).
- Some flows are declared under grouped or confidential codes: they count towards the totals but do not appear in country rankings.
- The country shown is the country of origin for non-EU imports, the country of consignment for intra-EU trade and the country of destination for exports.
Using these figures for your shipments
Chapter rankings show which tariff codes are actually used for a type of goods, a useful starting point to check your own classification. Country pages summarise the formalities for intra-EU trade or trade with non-EU countries.
Frequently asked questions
What is France's largest trading partner?
Germany has long been France's largest trading partner, imports and exports combined. The ranking over the last 12 published months is shown on this page, with a detailed page for each of the top 30 partners.
How often is the data updated?
The DGDDI publishes trade statistics every month. Customs Check regenerates these pages when the open dataset on data.gouv.fr is updated; each page states the period covered.
What does CN8 mean?
The Combined Nomenclature (CN) is the EU's tariff classification. Its 8-digit code refines the 6-digit international HS code; an import declaration adds two TARIC digits.
Can these statistics replace a customs declaration?
No. They are aggregated figures for analysis. Each shipment must be declared with its own code, value and origin; the Customs Check validator helps you review the file before submission.
